This is a piece that I just repainted. It will be used as the cover for the science fiction magazine Galaktia.
I went back and broke the composition out into layers and sub layers so that I could readdress alot of issues I had with original piece.

Acrylic. 25" x 18" original. This is an illustration from 'The war for Eternity by Christopher Rowley. It depicts a service the aliens, the Fen, have to honor their dead. They bring a hair from the body to scatter over a sacred pool. as each hair nears the surface of the water it blinks out of existance in a tiny star like light.

Two probes scoot through the upper reaches of a gas giant. This view shows ( from probe 2 ), a pod of floaters tending their young. The creatures drift along jet streams in the upper atmosphere sucking in organic molocules much the same as whales on Earth derive their norishmant from microscopic plankton.

Done in acrylic, original is 18" X 25". The story: A group of xenobiologists are tagging a group of hatchlings to study their migratory habits in the future. As they're working the mother unexpectedly returns. One of the group fires a low powered pulse at the mother's foot to fend her off until they can finisk=h and reach safety.

My entry for the 2D Spectacular challenge.
A war on Earth begings with the destruction of The Pillars. Three orbiting stations housing the economicly favored of Earth's population.
The primative shapes were laid out in MAX, then a render of that was used to paint over.
All the detail and color is painted.
